The Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a great Orthodox holiday, celebrated on October 14. It is installed in honor of the phenomenon of St. Andrew, the holy, Slavic origin, who lived in the capital of Byzantium - Constantinople, the Mother of God. It happened in the Vlaherna temple, which was located next to the imperial palace, and in which was stored the vestment of the Virgin Mary.
Times were heavy. Constantinople was threatened by enemy hordes. One day, the people, together with the ruler, gathered in the temple, and prayed to God to save them from trouble. The Holy Godfather Andrew at this moment saw the Blessed Virgin, who high in the air passed the royal doors of the temple, accompanied by John the Baptist and Evangelist John, as well as other Saints who solemnly sang and followed the Mother of God in glittering robes. Before the altar, the Most Pure had stripped off the omophorion (head board) and stretched it over the prayers, as a sign of Her special protection.
The enemy soon retired, and Christians have since celebrated this holiday.
