The Orthodox tradition says that the image of the Savior Not Made by Hands is the first icon of Christ the Savior. About this case in their books mention several holy fathers of the Church, including the Monk Ephrem the Syrian.
The story says that the sick Edessa king Avgar through the letter asked Christ for healing, the Lord sent him a small piece of cloth, which He wiped his face after washing. It reflected the face of the Savior.
This relic was carefully preserved by the king of Edessa and passed on to her by a descendant; later, when Christianity became the state religion, the face of Christ was transferred to Constantinople. Unfortunately, after the barbarian crusade and attacks on the Orthodox capital, many shrines, including the Savior Not Made by Hands, were stolen. Nevertheless, it was from this image that many lists were made that affected the entire iconography of the Lord Jesus Christ.
