The nun Varvara was a cell-keeper of the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, who was the elder sister of the Empress Alexandra Fedorovna Romanova. All of them are now ranked as saints.
After the death of her husband, Elizabeth Fyodorovna sold all her valuables and founded the Martha and Mary monastery, a convent with a special charter, which relied on medical work and charity. The nun Varvara became one of the first inhabitants of the monastery and a kleinite of the Grand Duchess. When the Bolsheviks came to power and Elizabeth Feodorovna was arrested, Varvara did not leave her, although she had such an opportunity, and went after her in exile.
There, in the city of Alapaevsk, the day after the execution of the royal family, the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, her cell-mate Varvara and several relatives of the Romanov family were dumped alive in the mine, where they died from their wounds. When Kolchak's army attacked, their bodies were transported to China, and later the body of martyrs Elizabeth and Barbara were sent to Jerusalem, where they are now resting at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Gethsemane Garden.
In 1992, the nun Varvara, together with Princess Elizabeth, were canonized in the face of the Martyrs.
