Valentin Voino-Yasenetsky (future Archbishop Luke) was born in the Crimea in the city of Kerch on April 27, 1877. In his youth, when he had to choose the profession, he chose medicine, because he really wanted to help the suffering people. After graduating from medical university, the young man took up medical practice and science. At the same time, he remained an exemplary Christian, regularly attending not only divine services, but participating in the life of the church brotherhood.
Even at the establishment of Soviet power, at the beginning of the last century, Valentin Feliksovich worked as a surgeon in Tashkent, and it was there that the bishop of Tashkent Innokenty offered the doctor to become a priest. After three years of priestly service, Father Valentine took a monastic vows and his new name - Luke, in honor of the holy evangelist, and after some time the hieromonk was ordained bishop.
Archbishop Luke was an amazing man. Arrests, threats, persecution by the Soviet authorities only strengthened his faith and firm determination to serve God and the Church. He zealously fulfilled his duty as a doctor and a pastor.
After the Great Patriotic War, Archbishop Luke returned to his native Crimea, where he served as the ruling priest until his death in 1961. The Lord rested on the Day of All Saints in the Russian Land, June 11th. Archbishop Luke was ranked among the saints, and his incorrupt relics were found in 1996 and are now in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Simferopol.
