Saint Theodotus lived in the 3rd century in the city of Ankara (the capital of modern Turkey). Contemporaries spoke of him as a very kind and merciful person.
During the Great Persecution, when the Roman Empire was ruled by Caesar Diocletian, a large number of Christians were persecuted and executed by the authorities of Rome for their faith. Saint Theodotus harbored the persecuted, visited them in prisons, found and buried the bodies of martyrs. It is known that one day he, with his own strength, pulled out of the water and buried the bodies of seven holy women who were drowned by pagans. This was learned and reported to the authorities. Saint Theodotus was seized and tortured, forcing him to renounce Christ, but he did not hesitate for a moment in faith. After the cruel torments of St. Theodotus, the chapter was cut off.
The name of Theodotus is translated from Greek as the Given God, therefore it corresponds to the Russian name Bogdan. Therefore Saint Theodotus is considered the Holy patron of Christians with the name Bogdan.
