The Monk Seraphim of Sarov is one of the most revered saints in the Orthodox Church. He was born in the city of Kursk in 1754 in the family of a wealthy merchant Isidor Moshnin. The boy was named Prokhor.
At the age of 22, he made a pilgrimage to the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, where he was blessed by the venerable old man Dosifei, who foretold him the further course of life - monastic. Four years later, the young man entered the monastery of the Sarov desert novice. His monastic path began there.
When Prokhor was 32 years old, he accepted a small schema with the name Seraphim and became an Hierodeacon. In seven years he was ordained as a hieromonk.
Approximately from this period Seraphim begins a special path of asceticism and solitude. He lives in a separate cell a few kilometers from the monastery, there is only what he will do himself, waking at night and praying a lot, avoiding contacts with people as much as possible.
By this period is also his heavy feat of pandering, when Saint Seraphim prayed for 1000 days on a large stone (as depicted on this icon). Later, to these difficult trials, he added a vow of silence. This went on for many years, until 1810. But then, returning to the monastery from his cell, St. Seraphim spent 15 years in the gate. And only after 1825, several years before his death, he came out of the shutter and began to receive many visitors, who helped with his vast spiritual experience, advice and immeasurable Christlike love. Every visitor he met only in words with my joy!
Many famous people visited St. Father, including Tsar Alexander the First. He went to the Lord Rev. Seraphim on January 2, 1833, while praying in his cell. Glorified in the face of saints during the reign of Nicholas II.
