The image of St. George remains relevant in the work of contemporary artists. At the heart of most of the works is a traditional story - St. George, who smashes a snake with a lance. However, despite the canonicity of the subjects, each of the works is deeply individual and reflects the subjective author's perception of the image of the saint. One of the most famous posthumous miracles of St. George is the killing of a serpent (dragon) by the lance, which devastates the land of a pagan king in Beirut. As the legend says, when the lot fell for the king's daughter to be torn to pieces, George appeared on horseback and pierced the serpent with a spear, saving the princess from death. The appearance of the saint contributed to the conversion of local residents to Christianity.
This story was often interpreted allegorically: the princess - the church, the serpent - paganism. It is also seen as a victory over the devil - the ancient serpent
