St. George was born to a wealthy family in the city of Beirut (capital of modern Lebanon), which was under the authority of Rome at that time. As a young man he joined the army, and very soon achieved great success, receiving the title of senior centurion of the Roman legion. George was smart, beautiful and very strong physically.
When he was 20 years old, his parents died, leaving him a large fortune. He has nothing there was no need. However, when a wave of so-called "great persecution" by the pagan Roman emperor Diocletian, the courage and the faith of Christians as he was struck that he declared himself a Christian, gave his possessions to the poor, and the emperor himself accused of cruelty and inhumanity.
During that St. George was thrown into prison and later put to severe torture, a young man who patiently endured until his pious death - he cut off his head with the sword. It happened in the year 303.
Even after his death, Saint George appeared in the form of a rider on a horse to residents of the city, after which there were numerous legends and traditions of the Holy Great Martyr.
By St. George seek help farmers and warriors. On icons, he is usually depicted riding a white horse slaying the devil - "the ancient serpent", or with a spear and a sword in his hand.
