St. Maximus was the son of a rich Greek dignitary and received a brilliant education. In his youth he traveled extensively and studied languages and sciences in European countries. Upon his return to his homeland he arrived in Athos and took monastic vows in the Vatopedi monastery. Later, on behalf of the Patriarch of Constantinople, he came to Moscow, where he spent many years translating and interpreting the service books from Greek to Slavonic, thus making a great contribution to the church accomplishment of Rus. Buried in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.
