St. Dionysios took monastic vows in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. In Nizhny Novgorod, he founded the Pechersky Ascension Monastery, which still operates today. In 1374, St. Dionysius became bishop of Suzdal and Nizhny Novgorod. It was him who, after the death of Metropolitan Alexy of Moscow, St. Sergius of Radonezh proposed the Grand Duke Dimitry to elect a chair for the Metropolitan. The Ecumenical Patriarch also highly appreciated the dignity of Dionysius and after a while it was he who appointed Metropolitan. However, returning to Moscow through Kiev, Dionysius was detained by a Lithuanian prince and imprisoned, where he died two years later.
