Holy righteous Elizabeth was the mother of the Holy Prophet Forerunner and Baptist John. She was the wife of the Holy Prophet Zachariah and a sister of St. Anne. The Blessed Virgin Mary was her doughter. The righteous spouses were walking in all the commandments of the Lord blameless but suffered barrenness. In the Old Testament times it was considered as a great punishment of God. Once during a service in the church of St. Zacharias received a message from an angel that his elderly wife would bear him a son who "will be great before the Lord" and "he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah." When the righteous Elizabeth had a son they named the baby John as the inspiration of the Holy Spirit announced.
When wicked King Herod was kilingd innocents, Elizabeth with John took refuge in the mountains. The rock miraculously hid them from pursuing of her king's soldiers. Her husband Zacharias refused to answer where they were and he was killed right in the temple. Righteous Elizabeth died 40 days after her husband. The Lord kept Holy Prophet Forerunner and Baptist John to the very day of the phenomenon of Israel.
