On the front side of the crucifix there is the Crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ traditionally depicted. Orthodox iconography shows us the crucified Lord not as a painfully dying man but as a grand and all-powerful God, who stretched out his arms as if embracing the whole world. Therefore on the crucifix he is often referred to as the King of Glory. The human suffering Lord usually indicates only by tilting his head and half-closed eyes.
The flip side of the cross is decorated with an icon of St. Nicholas who lived in the III century Bishop of the Lycian city of Myra. He is the most revered saint not only in Russia but also worldwide. For Western Christians he is like a kind of Santa Claus giving Christmas presents. For the Orthodox he is Saint Nicholas, an assistant in traveling, a patron of students, a comforter of offended and needy, a healer of the most terrible and severe illnesses, a prayer for the people before God.
On the cross the Zaraiskii image of the saint is depicted. It is glorified by many miracles. The icon was brought in 1224 from Korsun (Chersonesus) in city Zaraysk at the behest of Nicholas and became one of its most revered image in Russia.
