Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky was born on May the 30 in 1220. That was the most difficult time for Russia. There were the Mongol hordes coming from the East and the hordes of knightly Crusaders from the West. Prince Alexander became the savior of the Russian land.
The prince led the Novgorod army and defeated shelves Swedish Birger Jarl on the river Neva when he was not yet 20 years old. For this victory the people called him Nevsky. The next great battle was in 1242 with the army of the Teutonic Order cemented the Russian victory in the West. At the same time the prince was negotiating with the khans of the Golden Horde in the East in order to save Russia from defeat in the war against two enemies. St. Alexander went to the Horde for four times. After the fourth trip he fell ill. Before reaching Vladimir, in Gorodets in the 14 of November 1263 he took schema in Theodore monastery and gave up his spirit to the Lord.
In 1721 by Peter I transferred the power of Alexander Nevsky from Vladimir to St.Petersburg, where it reposes now. The memory of the saint is the 12 of September (30 August) and the 6 of December (23 November).
