The front side of the icon depicts a Guardian Angel. The word "angel" means "messenger". Angels are faithful servants of God, proclaiming His commands.
There are only nine angelic ranks. Guardian Angels are the lowest, because they are always next to people. Each person is given by God at Baptism his Guardian Angel. He accompanies him all his life until his death, and after death he accompanies his soul through air ordeals.
The Guardian Angel constantly prays for a person, protects him and instructs him in good charitable deeds. Often he tells how a person should act in a difficult situation. This mysterious voice of the Angel is called by many intuition, and some, hardened in soul, do not hear at all.
As a faithful friend and mentor, the Guardian Angel rejoices when a person turns to God, and is sad if he forgets about Him. Many holy spirit-seers saw angels rejoicing next to the righteous and weeping over the sinners. Angels retreat completely from sinners rooted in evil and unrepentant.
Orthodox people believe in the help of the Guardian Angel and are afraid to upset him with their sins.
