St. Great Martyr Catherine († 1st half of IV century) was born in Alexandria in a noble family and was raised in a pagan belief. One day with her mother, a secret Christian, girl visited a monk who predicted her marriage with the heavenly groom, and told her about the Christian faith. The same night in a dream appeared Christ before St. Catherine and put a beautiful ring on her finger. In the morning, she saw the wonderful ring. Girl returned to the monk and was baptized.
Saint Catherine started to openly preach Christianity, and during a visit of Emperor Maximin to Alexandria she took part in a public philosophical debate. The speech of saint was so convincing that many listeners and philosophers believed in Christ. The angered Emperor ordered to kill saint with starvation. But Lord has been sending a dove that brought food to the martyr. Not convinced with a miracle emperor ordered to destroy her body on a special wheels and then decapitate. The remains of the martyr were elevated to Mount Sinai, where her head and left hand with the ring were found by the monks of the monastery of Sinai.
St. Catherine is commemorated on December 7/24 November.
