The small icon shows the greatest sacred relic of Russia, the most beloved and worshipped icon by believers – the Kazan icon of the Mother of God. Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was revealed in Kazan in 1579 after a terrible fire that destroyed half of the city. First, the icon appeared in a dream a ten year old girl Matrona, the daughter of Archer, and ordered to tell governor and the archbishop to take icon from the scorched ruins to comfort and help the Orthodox.
In the summer of 1612 the National Guard, Kozma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky after praying to Kazan icon finally freed Russian capital. After the victory Prince Pozharsky built a temple in honor of the Kazan Icon on Red Square. The new king on the throne Mikhail Romanov commanded to commemorate icon twice a year - on July 21 on the day of appearance and 4 November to commemorate the liberation of Moscow.
The most honored copies of the icon are Moscow copy brought by Minin and Pozharsky, and St. Petersburg copy. After all, the ancient appearance of the icon is no longer exists. It was stolen and destroyed on the night of July 12, 1904 by sacrilegious people. But Virgin does not leave the believers without Her mercy. Even today, the prayers to the Kazan image do many miracles, especially in healing incurable diseases, and arranging people’s fates.
