On the front side of this square bead pendant is depicted the greatest sacred object of Christianity - the Vernicle Image of Christ. According to the Legend leprous King of Edessa once heard about Jesus Christ and His miraculous healings. He immediately sent his servant Abgarus to find and bring Jesus Christ. Servant begged Lord to come and to heal the King of Edessa. Instead Savior just washed His face and wiped it with a piece of canvas. Somehow His divine image had imprinted on it miraculously. Lord sent the image with servant to the King of Edessa and he was healed immediately. After a few centuries the Vernicle image of Christ (or the Savior image Not-Made-by-Hands) was moved to Constantinople. Later in 1204 it was lost during plunder of Constantinople by crusaders.
In Rus the copies of miraculous image were already widespread and honored from the XII century. Icons with the Vernicle image of Christ were honored as a special protection with life-saving and life-giving power. This image of Christ consecrated the helmets of Orthodox soldiers, regimental and church banners.
