St. George was born into a wealthy family in the city of Beirut (the capital of modern Lebanon), which at that time was under the rule of Rome. Very young, he entered the military service and very soon achieved great success, receiving the title of senior centurion of the Roman legion. George was smart, handsome and very strong physically.
When the boy turned 20 years old, his parents died, leaving him a large fortune. He did not need anything. However, when the wave of the so-called Great Persecution by the pagan Emperor Rome Deocaltian began, the courage and faith of Christians as much as he was struck by the fact that he himself declared himself a Christian gave the poor his estate, and accused the emperor of cruelty and inhumanity.
For this George was thrown into prison, and later betrayed to cruel tortures, which the young man patiently endured until his godly death - he was cut off with a sword head. It happened in the year 303.
Already after his death, St. George appeared in the form of a rider on horseback to the inhabitants of his city, after which there appeared multiple legends and traditions about the Holy Great Martyr.
St. George is turned to for help by farmers and soldiers. On the icons, he is usually depicted riding on a white horse, striking with the spear of the devil - the ancient serpent, or with a spear and sword in his hands.
