The Holy Great Martyr Panteleimon is one of the most famous saints of Christianity, who is revered as a healer of spiritual and physical diseases.
He was born in Nicomedia - a rich city, which at that time was the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. Panteleimon was the son of a wealthy pagan father and mother, who adopted Christianity. It was she who taught her child the basics of the Orthodox faith. At the youthful age, after the sudden death of his mother, Panteleimon was sent to study to a well-known doctor in the area, from whom the young man learned the art of medicine. The reigning emperor Maximian drew attention to a capable young doctor. He brought Panteleimon closer to the court.
There, in Nicomedia, the young man got acquainted with the Christian priest Ermolai, who revealed to him the full depth of the Orthodox faith. Panteleimon zealously believed in Christ and became gratuitously helping people with what he owned - the art of healing.
Most other city doctors who were pagans lost their income and wrote a report to the emperor. There was a trial, during which St. Panteleimon healed a deadly man, while pagan healers could not do it.
After such disgrace of paganism, by order of the emperor, Panteleimon was betrayed through torture and martyrdom.
The honest head of the holy healer is currently in the Panteleimon monastery on the Holy Mount Athos, and the Great Martyr himself is revered as the patron of doctors and soldiers.
