Orthodox Christians ask the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary for centuries. Before the Smolensk icon of the Theotokos, also known as icon Hodegetria, which leads from the Greek as Putevoditelnitsa, people pray to the Virgin for help in traveling and a happy return home. The iconographic style of writing of the icon is one of the oldest (VI century) and was created in ancient Palestine or Egypt. Even later, it spread throughout the East and the Byzantine Empire. Also copies of the icons came to Rus', where the Mother of God had healed and helped many believers who prayed her before this icon.
