The Apostle Peter is one of the most zealous followers of the Christian teaching of the Savior, for which he received his name (in Greek, "petros" - rock, stone). He converted many people to Christianity. Since St. Peter was the most beloved of the disciple of Jesus Christ and the strongest in the faith, he is entrusted with the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven.
We see that on the icon the Apostle Peter holds the keys in his hand. For Orthodox Christians it is an unfading symbol of repentance. Many icons depicting the first-ever apostle Peter show him in full growth, but there are also lists on which he is written to the waist. In addition, on the Orthodox icons, he is often depicted with his first associate - the apostle Paul, who was also engaged in preaching work. Celebrations in honor of the first-ever holy apostles Peter and Paul occur once a year, on July 12, after the fast.
